THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
-------------------
(for August 8, 1992)
Although it may have taken a back seat to the Summer
Olympics, a noteworthy chess tournament was also played at
Barcelona this year. Consisting primarily of players unable
to participate in the super-strong Category 17 Dortmund
tournament held at approximately the same time, the Rambla-
Barcelona FIDE Category 13 event (average rating of 2550)
featured an intriguing collection of ten GMs and 2 local
Spanish IMs.
Given the presence of veteran warriors Viktor Korchnoi,
Oleg Romanishin and the late Mikhail Tal, in addition to
young lions Vladimir Akopian, Ivan Sokolov, Josef Dorfman and
Joel Lautier, with Mikhail Gurevich thrown-in as the highest
rated player, and one is virtually assured of some exciting
chess. The sponsors and spectators were not disappointed.
When the last pawn had been pushed, the final standings
showed only a one point difference between first and tenth
place. The winners were Dorfman, the former Russian-
Ukrainian (now French?) GM and an unknown Spanish IM, Jorge
Magem Badals, both of whom finished with 6.5-4.5 scores. A
massive, five player logjam followed, one-half point back at
6-5: Romanishin, Akopian, Sokolov, Lautier and the Spaniard,
GM Manuel Rivas. Korchnoi, Tal and Gurevich achieved even
scores of 5.5 out of 11. The two lowest rated players,
Peruvian GM Rodriguez and Spanish IM Ochoa, trailed. Everyone
lost at least one game.
The slugfest between Lautier and Dorfman was typical of the
fighting spirit exhibited by many of the participants.
